Syrian-French archaeological mission 2010

Esta expedición duró 5 semanas en el campo, entre mayo y junio. Combinó veinte miembros procedentes de Europa: estudiantes de Nancy, París, Valencia, Montpellier y profesores e investigadores de Poitiers, Aix en Provence y Montpellier, incluido nuestro tutor que vive en Córcega! Se continuaron con los trabajos de la anterior expedición.



This mission took 5 weeks in the field between May and June. Combined twenty members from Europe: students of Nancy, Paris, Valencia, Montpellier, professors and researchers from Poitiers, Aix en Provence and Montpellier, including our tutor who lives in Corsica! He continued the work of the previous expedition.

FIELDWORK:

Este año se han logrado notables avances en el estudio de las Necrópolis, tanto en la zona sur de ciudad, como en la norte. Hemos sido capaces de localizar 225 fosas, (recordar que en las publicaciones de Jean Lauffray, sólo 51 tumbas habían sido identificadas). Ahora contamos con 31 tumbas, 66 torres, (tumbas individuales), 20 tumbas coronadas por un edificio de mampostería diseñados para señalar su ubicación, y 15 tumbas rupestres. El resto pertenecen a otro tipo o aún no se han identificado, ya que sólo se pueden identificar haciendo excavaciones adicionales. Se han descubierto cinco tumbas individuales. Entre ellas, tres tumbas son particularmente originales, cuyas paredes son de ladrillo.

This year there has been notable advances in the study of the necropolis, in the southern part of town and in the north. We were able to locate 225 tombs, (remember that in the publications of Jean Lauffray, only 51 graves had been identified). Now we have 31 tombs, 66 towers, (single graves), 20 tombs surmounted by a masonry building designed to pinpoint your location, and 15 rock tombs. The rest belong to another type or have not yet been identified, as can only be identified by additional excavations. They have discovered five individual graves. Three of them are particularly original tombs because their walls are with brick.

Se han excavado siete tumbas y  se han completado 29 planos arquitectónicos, (incluyendo los de todas las tumbas de las torres conservadas con al menos un lateral en pie), gracias al trabajo de los últimos dos años. También se hicieron hojas informativas específicas para 71 tumbas. Las siete tumbas excavadas este año lamentablemente habían sido visitadas previamente por los saqueadores, pero en una de ellas, la tumba S 230, se encontraron 30 esqueletos, dispuestos en el centro de la cámara funeraria y re-enterrados.Nuestros predecesores creían que la tumba 13 podría estar bloqueada desde el interior y es muy probable otras tumbas se hayan utilizado como refugio durante los ataques a la ciudad.

Seven tombs have been excavated and have completed 29 floor plans (including those of all the tombs of the towers preserved with at least one side up) thanks to the work of the last two years. Sheets were also specific for 71 graves. The seven tombs this year unfortunately had previously been visited by looters, but one, the tomb S 230, found 30 skeletons, arranged in the center of the burial chamber and re-enterrados.Nuestros predecessors believed that the tomb 13 could be locked from the inside and most likely other tombs have been used as a refuge during attacks on the city.

La rica y amplia tipología de tumbas en Halabiya nos permitirá compararlos con otras necrópolis de la región del Eufrates. La cuestión de las citas es controvertido, las tumbas-torres, por ejemplo, están fechadas por nuestros predecesores en un rango cronológico de entre el siglo primero a. C. y el siglo IV. de nuestra era. En cuanto a las tumbas, que sabemos de otros ejemplos, datan del siglo III AC hasta el siglo VI CE.

The rich and extensive typology of tombs in Halabiya allow us to compare them to other cemeteries in the region of the Euphrates. The question of dating is controversial, the tombs-towers, for example, are dated by our predecessors in a chronological range from the first century. BC. and the fourth century. of our era. As for the tombs, we know of other examples, dating from the third century BC to the sixth century EC.
