Eight questions candidates must ask in interview ?

Image
Sakaar Anand, VP-HR, CA Technologies advises you on questions to ask at your next job interview! Candidates often wonder if it is actually right to question their prospective employer about the job. Will the employer like it or get offended? It is an important window for a candidate to understand the mindset of their prospective employer. And, if candidates' feel they will fumble during the interview, it is wise to prepare a list of questions to grill the interviewer. However, the real trick is to choose the right questions. For mid and senior level jobs, some important questions that candidates should get answered are: * Please describe the top three things that really drive results for this company. * What is the company's culture and leadership philosophy like? * What do you expect me to accomplish in the first 60 to 90 days in this role? * What is the typical career trajectory for a person in this role and this role's contributio...

IT hiring may drop by 17% this fiscal: Nasscom

Rising automation and low attrition in IT sector may act as a dampener for job seekers with industry body Nasscomexpecting hiring to decline by up to 17 per cent to 1,50,000 in the current fiscal. The 108-billion dollar Indian IT-ITeS sector provides employment to about 3 million professionals. "I think we will have net additions of 150,000-180,000 this year. Last year it was about 180,000," Nasscom President Som Mittal said when asked about the hiring environment. Explaining the decline, he added: "It might be less than last year, as it is getting non-linear and lower-end jobs are getting automated. The profile is changing and we need more Domain experts." Attrition levels have also come down to around 14-15 per cent against the industry average of 20 per cent earlier. Mittal also said that campus hiring may fall significantly due to change in hiring patterns. "Campus hiring may be 60 per cent of what it was last year," he said, adding that now ...

LinkedIn study reveals why people hate their jobs

More or less everyone has a grudge or two against their job. LinkedIn has brought out some reasons as to why employees may be hating their job, the Huffington Post reported. A recent study by Dale Carnegie Training showed that nearly 75% of workers are not fully engaged at their jobs. One of the major reasons is that an employee's friends are having an amazing experience at another company, which makes them envious. The transparency of employee benefits and perks at other companies can sometimes lead them to dream about working elsewhere. Another reason could be that the workers believe that he/she is not valued. A person also feels dissatisfied with his/her job if they find no room for advancement. Many workers feel stuck in their company, which often leads to job hopping. Being paid less than what is deserve also leaves employee disenchanted with their work. Rules can also ruin a team, as it becomes frustrating when an employee is not able their own decisions. The pass...

The end of the Indian IT Industry as we know it?

Over the past couple few weeks, I have been reading & thinking about the salary hikes that the companies are doling out. This year, it has been challenging to provide “good” pay hikes to most of the employees and most of them are ending up feeling disappointed, cheated even. There were even  dharnas staged because companies could not fulfil their promises of hiring them after graduation. There was a time in the early – 2000s when the IT industry was the sunrise sector in India. 20+ % pay hikes were very common for even average performers in organizations. This behaviour carried on till 2008-09 when the global financial crisis unleashed itself. The financial crisis affected most mid to senior level employees and things changed for most of them. Even during this time, young graduates ( The last 1 year has been tough on the Indian IT sector  Most companies are reporting flat growth, squeezed margins, and record low utilization levels. A few of the companies have reported that...

Indian companies support 250,000 US jobs: US thinktank

Image
Citing the significant contributions of immigrants from India, a leading US thinktank has suggested that America must roll out the welcome mat to high-skilled workers to remain competitive and innovative.  While much of the congressional immigration reform debate is focused on a 'path to citizenship' for 11 million illegal immigrants, including some 260,000 Indians, a proposal by Senate's " Gang of Eight" focusing on skilled workers "should attract broad support," it said, describing it as 'path to prosperity'.  Called the Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, it proposes increasing the number of visas for high-skilled foreign workers and granting permanent legal ('green card') status to more foreign students who earn graduate degrees from American universities in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math).  "Current US immigration practices prevent U...

Five reasons why you should quit your current job?

A bad day in the office once in a while is fine, but long periods of being disheartened about the job or frequent lapses at work are an indication that the job may no longer interest you. But before you decide to look for an alternative, there are a few questions you should ask yourself. What are you unhappy about -- your job or your career? Is your dissatisfaction directly linked to a colleague or your boss? Do you see your long-term goals being met? NDTV spoke to two HR managers, one at an event management firm, and another at a consumer goods company. Here's what they have to say: 1. Underperformance: Constant failure to adhere to deadlines, negligence at work and lack of new ideas are a sure shot indicator that you might be on your way out. If you have reached a phase when you find it tough to match your usual performance levels, whether due to huge targets, competitive colleagues or lack of expertise, you should start looking for another job. Of course, you should not be jumpi...

US fiscal cliff: How it will hurt IT companies

Warning to investors: major UStechnology companies could miss estimates for fourth-quarter earnings as "fiscal cliff" worries likely led some corporate clients to tighten their belts last month and refrain from spending all of their 2012 IT budgets. Tech companies usually enjoy a spike in orders in December as corporations use money left over in their budgets to buy goods on their wish lists - information technology products that are nice to have, rather than essential. But the so-called year-end budget flush was not as deep in 2012 as in typical years, according to tech analysts and other experts citing conversations with corporate technology buyers and sales sources. They said companies held back onIT purchases in December in part because of Washington's protracted negotiations to avoid the fiscal cliff, which is a package of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that could have pushed the already soft US economy into recession. It took until ...

Mid-tier IT companies may give small increment in 2013

Faced with continuing uncertainty in their largest markets, US and Europe, mid-sized technology outsourcing companies will give out tepid pay hikes and cut down on their campus hiring in 2013. Coming out of a slow year when the IT industrysaw slowing revenue growth thanks to clients being more cautious about technology spending, software services exporters such as Infinite Technologies, Mastek, Mahindra Satyam andInfotech Enterprises said the pay hikes could be as low as 5% this year. Compared to double-digit pay hikes till a few years ago, salary increments in India's $100-billion (Rs 5.5 lakh crore) IT industry has been consistently declining since the financial crisis of 2008, from which US and Europe is yet to completely recover. "Wage hikes for IT employees will be lower than last year due to slowdown in the US and European markets and pricing pressure from clients there," said BVR Mohan Reddy, chairman and managing director o...

Why 2013 could be a bad year for IT graduates

The slowdown in India's IT sector will continue to impact campus hiring of fresh engineering graduates in 2013, according to a report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The $100 billion IT industry is expected to meet the lower end of 11-14 per cent growth projection in 2012-13, according to software companies association Nasscom. Campus hiring in 2013 is likely to be lower than in 2012 just as 2012 trailed 2011 recruitments. The news should not come as a surprise because big companies such as Infosys have been deferring joining dates of new hires in the past confirming that all is not well in India's much admired IT sector. TCS, India's biggest IT software services exporter, plans to hire 25,000 freshers in 2013-14 against 60,000 freshers in 2012-13.  That's a drop of nearly 60 per cent in a year's time. Unfortunately, the trend is likely to be similar across big IT firms. Cognizant's headcount planning for 2012 was too high, according to S...

IT company Mindlogicx to hire 1,000 in 2013

Image
Mindlogicx, a tech product development company in the higher educationspace, announced it will be hiring 1,000 people over the next 6-12 months as part of its expansion plans that will see the company establish a national presence. The company, which has 10 Indian Universities as its customers and a student base of one million, is targeting to double to two million students over the next 12 months, it said in a statement. The city-headquartered company currently has employee strength of over 400 people working out of the company's 1.5 lakh square feet facility here. The hiring will be both from campuses and outside and will include software programmers, technology and network support engineers and semi-skilled people, it was stated. The company has thus far invested Rs 20 crore in R&D of its exam automation suite of products called IntelliEXAMS which, it said, has helped automate the examination process across 1,000 examination centres...

IT hiring: APAC region to have 9,60,000 jobs by 2015

Image
Research firm Gartner p redicts that by 2014, IT hiring in major western markets will come predominantly from Asian-headquartered companies enjoying double-digit growth. "An increasing number of successful Asian companies - particularly from China and India - are enjoying double-digit growth rates and will substantially grow their geographic footprints, making investments in major western markets through 2015. Consequently, these organizations will be responsible for major hiring of IT professionals to support their growth at a time when western companies will still be coping with the impact of the economic crisis," Peter Sondergaard, Gartner senior vice president and global head of research said. By 2015, 4.4 million IT jobs globally will be created to support big data. Of these, 960,000 will be in the Asia Pacific region. Every big data-related role in Asia Pacific will create employment for three people outside of IT, so a tot...

How cloud computing can hurt jobs

Cloud computing, regarded as a boon for enterprises, could rain on the party of distributors and resellers who are now an integral part of the technology sales ecosystem. In developed economies, the community of resellers is already shrinking as software and hardware companies engage directly with enterprises. In India, where cloud adoption is just about gaining pace, the drizzle has begun. "Given the nature of the cloud business, we see that it could be a threat. But the adoption rate is very slow and, therefore, we have a few years before we see signs of trouble," said Ratnesh Rathi, secretary at Computer & Media Dealers Association, whose 350-odd members do business in and around Pune. Across India, some Rs 61,500 crore worth of hardware and Rs 18,000 crore worth of software products are sold every year, according to industry body Nasscom. And about 23,000 distributors, resellers and retailers - often called channel partners - are responsi...

IT industry to create 4.4 million jobs

Image
IT industry would see creation of 4.4 million jobs globally by 2015 to support big data, but only one-third of the jobs will be filled because there is not enough talent, according to IT research and advisory firm Gartner. It also said the IT spending is forecast to surpass $3.7 trillion in 2013, a 3.8 per cent increase from the current year projected spending of $3.6 trillion. "By 2015, 4.4 million IT jobs globally will be created to support big data, generating 1.9 million IT jobs in the United States," said Peter Sondergaard, Senior Vice-President at Gartner and Global Head of Research. In addition, every big data-related role in the US will create employment for three people outside of IT, so over the next four years a total of 6 million jobs in the US will be generated by the information economy, Gartner said. "But there is a challenge. There is not enough talent in the industry. Our public and private education systems are failing us. Therefore, only one-thi...

Job search: Social media startups beating job portals

Startup companies building applications usingsocial-media tools to pinpoint the right candidate for a job are prompting a wave of change in corporate hiring. With their ability to reach out to people who are not even scouting for a job, these technology-enabled startups look set to steal a lead over internet job portals that feature only candidates actively seeking new opportunities.  In less than a year of operations, some of these startups such as Round One, MyParichay, Antezen and HireRabbit have signed on dozens of corporate clients and are testing their applications in over a 100 companies across the globe. "Social media networks can reach people willing to join if offered the right job," says Advit Sahdev, chief executive officer of ODigMa, a social-media marketing venture.  In recent years, social media has played a supporting role in hiring, by helping managers run identity checks and do the requisite due diligence on prospective candidates. But these technology-enabl...
