Image
US-headquartered Indian IT services major Cognizant has been ranked at 12th place on a Forbes list of America's 25 fastest growing tech companies, which has been topped by business networking site LinkedIn. Social networking giant Facebook is ranked second, followed by global IT major Apple at the third place. Nasdaq-listed Cognizant, which recently pipped Infosys as the second-largest IT services firm in India, is the only Indian company on the list. Despite being a US-based company, a significant portion of its employees are from India. Others on the list include 3D Systems (4th), IPG Photonics (5th), EPAM Systems (6th), Shutterstock (7th), InvenSense (8th), Shutterfly (9th), OpenTable (10th), SolarWinds (11th), athenahealth (13th), Ixia (14th) and Equinix (15th). The end of the Indian IT Industry as we know it?

Over the past couple few weeks, I have been reading & thinking about the salary hikes that the companies are doling out. This year, it has been challenging to provide “good” pay hikes to most of the employees and most of them are ending up feeling disappointed, cheated even. There were even  dharnas staged because companies could not fulfil their promises of hiring them after graduation. There was a time in the early – 2000s when the IT industry was the sunrise sector in India. 20+ % pay hikes were very common for even average performers in organizations. This behaviour carried on till 2008-09 when the global financial crisis unleashed itself. The financial crisis affected most mid to senior level employees and things changed for most of them. Even during this time, young graduates ( The last 1 year has been tough on the Indian IT sector  Most companies are reporting flat growth, squeezed margins, and record low utilization levels. A few of the companies have reported that...

Indian companies support 250,000 US jobs: US thinktank

Image
Citing the significant contributions of immigrants from India, a leading US thinktank has suggested that America must roll out the welcome mat to high-skilled workers to remain competitive and innovative.  While much of the congressional immigration reform debate is focused on a 'path to citizenship' for 11 million illegal immigrants, including some 260,000 Indians, a proposal by Senate's " Gang of Eight" focusing on skilled workers "should attract broad support," it said, describing it as 'path to prosperity'.  Called the Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, it proposes increasing the number of visas for high-skilled foreign workers and granting permanent legal ('green card') status to more foreign students who earn graduate degrees from American universities in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math).  "Current US immigration practices prevent U...

Indian IT faces difficult times ahead as Gartner cuts growth forecast

After delivering an upbeat growth forecast for IT services in 2013 three months ago, Gartner seems to have toned down its expectations a bit. The global technology research firm on Thursday said worldwide spending on IT services is likely to grow by 4.5% in the current calendar year. While this is still far higher than the anticipated increase of 1.5% last year, its latest estimate is 70 basis points lower than what it had predicted three months ago. In January, it had guided for 5.2% growth for the current fiscal. Gartner has reduced its forecast citing continued hesitation among global clients and cost pressure on vendors. "Although the United States did avoid the fiscal cliff, the subsequent sequestration, compounded by the rise of Cyprus' debt burden, seems to have netted out any benefit, and the fragile business and consumer sentiment throughout much of the world continues," Gartner's managing vice president Richard Gordon said in a p...

Infosys: Hiring in Indian IT sector to remain slow in 2013

Image
Hiring activity in the IT sector is likely to be muted this year, Infosys Co-founder and Executive Co-Chairman S Gopalakrishnan has said. "Hiring position seems to be muted this year because many companies still have deep bench (strength), in other words their utilisation rate is still low," he told PTI.  The $100-billion India IT-ITeS sector faced strong headwinds in 2012-13 due to global economic slowdown and muted spending in North America and Europe, which accounts for 80 per cent of Indian IT companies revenues.  Industry-body Nasscom expects a rise in global technology spending and opportunities created through adoption of disruptive technologies to propel growth in FY 2014.  Nasscom expects export revenues of $84-87 billion in 2013-14 fiscal at a growth rate of 12-14 per cent. Exports were estimated to have grown by 10.2 per cent to $75.8 billion in FY 2013.  The Indian IT industry, which contributes about 7.5 per cent to the coun...

Pointers to Employees – to keep yourself and your boss happy

These are just my immediate thoughts from delving into my experiences to-date,  regarding things that employees could think about, to ensure optimum performance at their jobs, both in the short-term as well as long-term, which in turn ensures happiness and satisfaction at work, both for the employee, their peers, their sub-ordinates and their boss. Love to hear comments & suggestions from all… Before You Even Join a Firm Before you join a firm, ensure that you understand your own career goals and that you research well about the company you are considering joining and specifically, about the roles that are being offering you – ensure that they fit well, with your overall career goals and interests. While salary is certainly an important factor it’s not everything, when making your decision to join a firm. Understand Yourself in Relationship with the Firm You Work With Try to understand the big picture to the extent you are able to. Try to identify your role...

Why smaller IT companies are leaving Nasscom

Image
Nasscom veterans know it only too well that the IT industry lobby group has to re-fashion itself to suit a $100-billion industry, up from $10 million in 1988 when it was set up. That's one reason for Nasscom's recent move to have a panel headed by Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy to make recommendations to "restructure" the organisation and stay relevant in a fast-evolving IT environment.  Murthy did make some suggestions, including Nasscom expanding its focus areas to more segments within the industry. One of his key suggestions was to add 3,000 new companies as its members over the next five years. And at least three members of Nasscom's governing body, the executive council (EC), whom ET Magazine spoke to, say that is easier said than done.  The concern Murthy seems to have had — a static membership base — stems from the realisation that over the past five years Nasscom's membership has remained stagnant at just under 1,200 ...

Five reasons why you should quit your current job?

A bad day in the office once in a while is fine, but long periods of being disheartened about the job or frequent lapses at work are an indication that the job may no longer interest you. But before you decide to look for an alternative, there are a few questions you should ask yourself. What are you unhappy about -- your job or your career? Is your dissatisfaction directly linked to a colleague or your boss? Do you see your long-term goals being met? NDTV spoke to two HR managers, one at an event management firm, and another at a consumer goods company. Here's what they have to say: 1. Underperformance: Constant failure to adhere to deadlines, negligence at work and lack of new ideas are a sure shot indicator that you might be on your way out. If you have reached a phase when you find it tough to match your usual performance levels, whether due to huge targets, competitive colleagues or lack of expertise, you should start looking for another job. Of course, you should not be jumpi...

US fiscal cliff: How it will hurt IT companies

Warning to investors: major UStechnology companies could miss estimates for fourth-quarter earnings as "fiscal cliff" worries likely led some corporate clients to tighten their belts last month and refrain from spending all of their 2012 IT budgets. Tech companies usually enjoy a spike in orders in December as corporations use money left over in their budgets to buy goods on their wish lists - information technology products that are nice to have, rather than essential. But the so-called year-end budget flush was not as deep in 2012 as in typical years, according to tech analysts and other experts citing conversations with corporate technology buyers and sales sources. They said companies held back onIT purchases in December in part because of Washington's protracted negotiations to avoid the fiscal cliff, which is a package of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that could have pushed the already soft US economy into recession. It took until ...

Mid-tier IT companies may give small increment in 2013

Faced with continuing uncertainty in their largest markets, US and Europe, mid-sized technology outsourcing companies will give out tepid pay hikes and cut down on their campus hiring in 2013. Coming out of a slow year when the IT industrysaw slowing revenue growth thanks to clients being more cautious about technology spending, software services exporters such as Infinite Technologies, Mastek, Mahindra Satyam andInfotech Enterprises said the pay hikes could be as low as 5% this year. Compared to double-digit pay hikes till a few years ago, salary increments in India's $100-billion (Rs 5.5 lakh crore) IT industry has been consistently declining since the financial crisis of 2008, from which US and Europe is yet to completely recover. "Wage hikes for IT employees will be lower than last year due to slowdown in the US and European markets and pricing pressure from clients there," said BVR Mohan Reddy, chairman and managing director o...

Why 2013 could be a bad year for IT graduates

The slowdown in India's IT sector will continue to impact campus hiring of fresh engineering graduates in 2013, according to a report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The $100 billion IT industry is expected to meet the lower end of 11-14 per cent growth projection in 2012-13, according to software companies association Nasscom. Campus hiring in 2013 is likely to be lower than in 2012 just as 2012 trailed 2011 recruitments. The news should not come as a surprise because big companies such as Infosys have been deferring joining dates of new hires in the past confirming that all is not well in India's much admired IT sector. TCS, India's biggest IT software services exporter, plans to hire 25,000 freshers in 2013-14 against 60,000 freshers in 2012-13.  That's a drop of nearly 60 per cent in a year's time. Unfortunately, the trend is likely to be similar across big IT firms. Cognizant's headcount planning for 2012 was too high, according to S...

Image
Mindlogicx, a tech product development company in the higher educationspace, announced it will be hiring 1,000 people over the next 6-12 months as part of its expansion plans that will see the company establish a national presence. The company, which has 10 Indian Universities as its customers and a student base of one million, is targeting to double to two million students over the next 12 months, it said in a statement. The city-headquartered company currently has employee strength of over 400 people working out of the company's 1.5 lakh square feet facility here. The hiring will be both from campuses and outside and will include software programmers, technology and network support engineers and semi-skilled people, it was stated. The company has thus far invested Rs 20 crore in R&D of its exam automation suite of products called IntelliEXAMS which, it said, has helped automate the examination process across 1,000 examination centres...

IT hiring: APAC region to have 9,60,000 jobs by 2015

Image
Research firm Gartner p redicts that by 2014, IT hiring in major western markets will come predominantly from Asian-headquartered companies enjoying double-digit growth. "An increasing number of successful Asian companies - particularly from China and India - are enjoying double-digit growth rates and will substantially grow their geographic footprints, making investments in major western markets through 2015. Consequently, these organizations will be responsible for major hiring of IT professionals to support their growth at a time when western companies will still be coping with the impact of the economic crisis," Peter Sondergaard, Gartner senior vice president and global head of research said. By 2015, 4.4 million IT jobs globally will be created to support big data. Of these, 960,000 will be in the Asia Pacific region. Every big data-related role in Asia Pacific will create employment for three people outside of IT, so a tot...

How cloud computing can hurt jobs

Cloud computing, regarded as a boon for enterprises, could rain on the party of distributors and resellers who are now an integral part of the technology sales ecosystem. In developed economies, the community of resellers is already shrinking as software and hardware companies engage directly with enterprises. In India, where cloud adoption is just about gaining pace, the drizzle has begun. "Given the nature of the cloud business, we see that it could be a threat. But the adoption rate is very slow and, therefore, we have a few years before we see signs of trouble," said Ratnesh Rathi, secretary at Computer & Media Dealers Association, whose 350-odd members do business in and around Pune. Across India, some Rs 61,500 crore worth of hardware and Rs 18,000 crore worth of software products are sold every year, according to industry body Nasscom. And about 23,000 distributors, resellers and retailers - often called channel partners - are responsi...
