Syrian-French archaeological mission 2009

Esta expedición tubo lugar en mayo-junio del 2009 y duró 5 semanas. El equipo de excavación consistió en cincuenta miembros, (25 europeos y sirios 25). Aquí os presento a la mayoría.

This mision was in may-june of 2009 during 5 weeks. The equip of excavation consists in fifty members, (25 european and 25 syrian). Here I introduce you mostly of them:

En el desplazamiento desde la capital, Damasco, hasta Deir Ez-zor, paramos en "Bagdad Cafe", un lugar enfocada directamente al turismo, donde poder sacar una instantáneas típicas, a la vez que comprar regalos o disfrazarse como un auténtic@ sirian@.



In the way from the capital, Damasc, to Dei Ez-zor, we stoped at "Badgad Cafe", a turist place where you can take a typical photography, buy some gifts and even dress up like a real sirian:

La ciudad de Halabiya/Zenobia se encuentra situada a orillas del Eufrates, con unas vistas alucinantes. Cada día nos desplazabamos desde Deir Ez-zor hasta ella. Nos alojábamos en el Hotel Furat Cham Palace, un hotel de 4 estrellas con piscina e incluso gimnasio, también a orillas del Eufrates.



The city of Halabiye/Zenobia is located on the right bank of the Euphrates, with a incredible views. Each day we moved from Deir Ez-zor to there. We stayed at the Hotel Furat Cham Palace, a 4 star hotel with swimming pool and even a gym, also on the right bank of the Euphrates:

En el autobús había una zona VIP en la parte trasera y una clara jerarquía en sus asientos. El grupo español/italiano conquistó la parte trasera del autobús con éxito, al más puro estilo Taliban.

In the bus was a VIP area on the back and a clear hierarchy in their seats. The spanish/italian group conquisted the back of the bus successfully, with Taliban-style:

 

De camino a Zenobia, el conductor nos solía hacer paradas junto al Eufrates para sacar fotografías del amanecer y en la aldea junto a la ciudad, donde pudimos ver como secaban bloques de adobe.



On the way to Zenobia, the driver used to stop the bus near the Euphrates to take pictures of sunrise and in the village near the city, where we could see dried adobe blocks:

 

Mi compañera, Lidia Garcia, y yo, empezamos el estudio de las tumbas que hay alrededor de Halabiya/Zenobia, en el sector norte de la ciudad. Las dividimos siguiendo el sistema de J. Lauffray: por una parte las torres, por otra las enterradas en la llanura y por otra las excavadas en la montaña.



My co-worker, Lidia Garcia, and I began the study of the tombs around Halabiya / Zenobia, in the north of the city. We followed the system  that J. Lauffray creates to classify is: on one hand, the towers; on the other hand the buried tombs in the plain, and the last group, the ones excavated in the mountains:

Del primer grupo este año estudiamos 5 torres, de las cuales sólo 2 eran accesibles, (04 y 13). La primera tumba funeraria a estudiar fue una de las más grandes y mejor conservada, la tumba nº14. Nos llevo más de una semana completarla debido a su complejidad. Además, al tratarse de la única tumba del norte que sobrepasaba el límite del puente, (punto de control militar), tuvimos algunos problemas para que nos dejaran empezar a trabajar. Por si esto fuera poco, tuvimos alguna que otra tormenta de tierra. Debido a su lejanía de la ciudad, los amables operarios Sirios nos llevaban en moto al principio de la jornada y nos recogían al final. Nuestro compañero del grupo italiano, Manuel Cason, nos ayudó en la obtención de las fotografías para la obtención de los fotoplanos. En esta tumba tuvimos suerte de que los murciélagos sólo la visitaban por la noche, (momento en que depositaban sus apreciados excrementos:

From the first group, this year, we studied 5 towers, only 2 of them accesibles, (04 and 13). The first tomb to study was one of the most bigest and better conserved, the tomb No.14. It taked to us more than one week to finish it because of its complexity. Also, because this tomb was on the other part of the bridge, (militar control point), we had some problems to start the work. As if this were not enough, we had occasional dust storm. Because of its remoteness from the city, the friendly Syrian workers were taking us on a motorbike at the beginning of the day and picking us up at the end. Our Italian friend, Manuel Cason, helped us to obtained the photographs to make the fotoplans. In this tomb we were lucky that bats only visited it at night (when they deposited their appreciated droppings:

Seguimos con la tumba nº23, que también era accesible, pero la entraba había que hacerla arrastrándose por un ahujero. En esta también encontramos algunos problemas, pero esta vez con muerciélagos, cientos de ellos ubicados en la cúpula del interior.Por esta razón entrabamos solas y por turnos para no tener que estar sufriendo las dos. Cada vez que pasabamos el puntero láser del distanciómetro se agitaban todas las crías. Un verdadero calvario, como se puede observar:

The next one, was the tomb No.23, also accesible, but the entrance was a hole on the ground. In this one we have some problems too, but this time with bats, hundreds of them located on the interior ceiling. For this reason we make turns to enter to the tomb alone, to not suffer it both at the same time. Every time we passed the laser pointer of the distance meter into the ceiling, the bats fluttered and moved so quick:

Del segundo grupo, los arqueólogos nos limpiaron y despejaron bastantes de ellas para poder trabajar.



On the second group, the archaeologists cleaned and cleared us enough of them to work:

Del tercer y último grupo, destaco la tumba nº 33, ya que poseía las mejores vistas del río Eufrates.  



In the third and last group, I emphasize the tomb No.33, as it had the best views of the river Euphrates:

Por otra parte, el grupo de arquitectos italianos formado por Lisa Barberini, Giovanni Dellai y Manuel Cason, se encargó del estudio de dos áreas de la muralla de la ciudad. 

Moreover, the group formed by the Italian Architects Lisa Barberini, Giovanni Dellai and Manuel Cason, undertook the study of two areas of the city wall:

En la pared sur, el estudio se centró en las torres 1 y 2 de bastiones y el muro que las une, ya que no pudieron ser debidamente estudiados por Jean Lauffray por la falta de andamiaje lo suficientemente alto. Este año se resolvió este problema. 

In the south wall, the study focused on the towers 1 and 2 of bastions and the wall that connects them, as they could't be properly studied by Jean Lauffray because by that time they hadn't scaffolding high enough. This year we solved this problem:

El estudio arquitectónico de este año fue capaz de confirmar las sospechas de Jean Lauffray acerca de la anterior muralla. Así que ahora estamos en condiciones, tras el descubrimiento en 2007 de los cimientos de la muralla norte de la antigua ciudad, para proponer una hipótesis de ella. 

The architectural study this year was able to confirm the suspicions of Jean Lauffray on the wall above. So we are now able, after the 2007 discovery of the foundations of the north wall of the ancient city, to propose a hypothesis for it.

Pero no todo fue trabajo en la ciudad, también tuvimos un poco de tiempo para explorar, visitar el resto de grupos y divertirnos. Jean-Luc Mulhauser hizo un gran trabajo de consolidación. Hasta teniamos una mascota!



It was not all work in the city, also had a little time to explore, to visit the other groups and have fun. Jean-Luc Mulhauser did a great job of consolidation. Even we had a pet!

 

Sin olvidar que este proyecto y aventura es gracias a la francesa Sylvie Blétry, (la directora de la expedición), la Universidad Paul-Valéry, Montpellier III / la Dirección General de Antigüedades y Museos de Siria, con el apoyo del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, el Instituto Francés de Oriente Medio en Damasco, en colaboración con la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia y con la el patrocinio de la Fundación Osman Aidi, de Damasco. Fue ella quien acepto colaborar con la UPV, bajo los responsables Camilla Mileto y Fernando Vegas, los cuales nos dieron la oportunidad de vivir esta gran experiencia. 

Not to mention that this project and adventure was thanks to the French Sylvie Blétry, director of the mision.University Paul-Valéry, Montpellier III / General Direction of Antiquities and Museums of Syria, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the French Institute in Damascus Middle East, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Valencia and with the sponsorship of the Osman Aidi Foundation, Damascus. It was she who agree to work with the UPV under the charge of Camilla Mileto and Fernando Vegas, which gave us the opportunity to live this great experience.
