5 Pointers for Keeping a Design Project on Track
-->
1) Define the Project aims
Decide why you want to undertake this project. Is it to add value? promote or raise awareness of your business/product/service? … Or because your competitors have just done something similar and you thought you should keep up? Consider also, what will work for your business and your sector? What will your clients respond to? Some basic market research will go a long way.
2) Set a budget
Consider what you can realistically invest in the project and what your return on investment might be? Spending that little bit more on quality is likely to save you time (and money) and may give you a better financial return.
3) Write a brief
Trust in your designers – if you’ve chosen the right people, they will be qualified and experienced. Importantly they should listen to you and ask lots (and lots) of questions – from this they should be able to interpret your needs and help realise your project goals. In addition, careful project management from the outset - agreeing interim milestones, meeting dates and final deadlines etc. – will ensure all involved parties communicate and work towards the same goals.
4) Define Key roles
Deciding who should be involved in the project from the start is important for continuity, efficiency and strength of design – too many opinions (from members of staff, family, friends and neighbours) during the early stages of the design process can seriously water down a focused and impact-lead project. Do take the time to review and discuss the ongoing work (particularly in the initial stages) so that you can make sure that everyone is on the same wavelength.
5) Shout it from the rooftops
Don’t forget to launch your project with a bang. Although it might have been an important undertaking for you, people will need to be told about it. Why not start by asking your existing client base to provide honest feedback – this can be both invaluable to you, and can also bolster your relationship with clients who will appreciate that you value their opinion.
