Self-Actualisation in Business

In 1954 psychologist Abraham Maslow developed his ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ behaviour model which consisted of the following (in order of importance):

1.    Physiological (food, water, shelter, warmth)
2.    Safety (security, stability, freedom from fear)
3.    Belonging/Love (friends, family, love)
4.    Self Esteem (Achievement, recognition, respect)
5.    Self-Actualisation (Pursue inner talent, creativity, fulfillment)

To achieve self-actualisation, he identified some key behaviours/characteristics including:

•    Experiencing life with full absorption/concentration
•    Trying new things
•    Listening to feelings and experiences, rather than tradition, authority or majority
•    Being honest
•    Taking responsibility
•    Working hard
•    Identifying and battling your weaknesses

Maslow did not equate self-actualisation with perfection, but rather perceived it as achieving one’s potential. If this is possible for individuals, surely the fundamental principles can be applied to businesses as well?
